Bruckner's first leading role came as a lead in Blue Car (2002), an independent movie in which she played a student who had an affair with David Strathairn as her high school teacher. Roger Ebert, a film critic, wrote that Bruckner was able to perform the challenging role with total conviction. Bruckner was awarded the Independent Spirit Award nomination for "Best Female Lead" for the part. She was raised by three sisters and one brother. Her primary language was Hungarian as she often practiced it to remain in the loop. Bruckner was the Hollywood California native born to a Hungarian and Russian father who divorced their mother at some point in the past and was raised by a German paternal grandmother. In Hungary Her parents were initially met before moving into America in 1984 through the refugee settlement of Italy. There are two of her siblings as well as an older brother.
